Bats to Bats!

Friends~We are finishing up our Baseball theme in 2nd grade and it has been tons of fun!  My 2nd graders have had tons of fun learning about teamwork and researching famous baseball players! This week we will be heading into the computer lab to complete our reports by researching on the web.   Check out these cute Silly Band stories we wrote in the writing center this week!  My kiddos loved choosing 3 bands and creating a story to go along with them.  My teammate found these baseball themed ones at a toy store.  They are PERFECT!  Click the image to grab a FREE copy of my Silly Band writing sheet!

Starting the Year With Number Sense

color coded number grid
I've been blessed with the gift of time!

Since I'm piloting a new math program this year, I've had some time at the beginning of the year to do some math activities of my choice before we start in with the new program.

Thanks to the ideas of Jessica Shumway's book, and lots of experience teaching math, I've been able to start the year with some valuable math experiences that will help the children internalize math concepts.  They're gaining Number Sense!  Come on over to Elementary Matters to see some of the math activities I've had a chance to do this year!

What would you do if you had time to choose what to teach in math?

Addition Strategies

This week, we've been using my Addition Strategies pack to review the different strategies to use when adding....

These are the strategies that are in the center/"assessment."

I gave the "test" today....it was interesting. First, they had to solve the problems that are on the paper, then they have to cut and paste the problems under the header of the strategy they used. I got to see some interesting "answers" today after working on the centers all week.

Go check it out...

There's a little Giveaway too!

A True Test for Spelling Skills

I've had a lot of training in the areas of language, phonics, phonemic awareness, and spelling.  One thing that I've learned about spelling is that mastering the skill of spelling involves learning patterns, not individual words.  Knowing this has inspired me to change the way I do spelling this year.  Come on over to Elementary Matters and see how I've changed spelling!

Honoring Our Heroes

The anniversary of the events of Sept. 22, 2001 is this week.  I find most little ones aren't really able to comprehend these events, but I struggle to treat it like "just another day".

In the last couple of years, I have found that celebrating heroes is a good compromise.

Come on over to Elementary Matters and find my hero freebie, and a few other ideas for honoring Sept. 11th.

Building Vocabulary and Oral Language

I've been taking LETRS training.  LETRS stands for Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling.  It has been a great opportunity to learn about recent research and studies on best practices on reading and spelling instruction.

Come see some of the things I learned about Vocabulary and Oral Language as related to reading over at Elementary Matters.
