All Kinds of Freebies

This week, we are working on a hard skill for some kiddos...quotations. They have such a hard time figuring out where the darn things go..before the period, after the period, and the comma really throws them for a loop.
Today, I had the kids write a sentence on a sentence strip with elbow macaroni as the commas and quotation marks.

We also did this rhyming poem from the book "Punctuation Celebration." If you don't have it, you should definitely check it out from Scholastic. There are cute poems for all types of punctuation.

I've made this resource to practice this skill. I am going to cut them in half so each child gets a different person. There are 11 different pages so that makes enough for 22 kids. There are two version available. One with the quotes already added and one where the kids need to add the quotes themselves.

We are also working on changing a y to an i and adding es when we do irregular plurals. I made a sign for my kids to help them remember.  Click on the picture to download.

I've also had some questions about how I display my standards. Here are a couple of photos from my classroom.

 I use a little pocket chart to display the teacher standards. We have to have these posted every day.

I use part of my whiteboard for the student cards. I use Stikki Clips to hold the cards up. This makes it easy to change them out everyday.

I've also posted the Tennessee standards in reading and math as they go along with the Treasures series and the enVision math series. I've had many requests for these because they are more detailed than the common core standards. You can find them in my TPT store.

Words from a 2nd Grader

Last Friday, one of my little cuties came up to my desk, with a friend. They were getting ready to do 'Read to Someone' and her book basket handle was broken. I told her to wait right there while I got something. I got some blue duct tape, ripped a piece off, and wrapped it around the handle. As I handed her the basket, she turned to her friend and said, "Teachers can do ANYTHING!" 

Those words got me out of bed this morning with a smile and made me realize...I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to. I pray I am able to handle what these little 7 and 8-year-olds throw at me today. I also hope that I don't let what the 'tall people' say or do get in the way either.

Tally Freebie!

Happy Sunday! I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend! :)

I spent yesterday scrapbooking with my mom and some other women. Went to a super fun bonfire last night (I love fall!) and spent today at school, the grocery store, and the couch!

Tomorrow my school is off for "Fair Day"... so I'm going to go to the county fair!

I just posted a tally mark freebie on my site. My first graders are going to be introduced to tally marks this week and I thought this would be fun for homework!

Plants and Main Idea

Well, time is flying fast this year. I can't believe September is halfway over.  I am loving the weather this past week. It's definitely feeling like fall. It's amazing how it went from 90 degrees to 70 degrees in one day. Fall is my favorite time of year so I hope it stays like this for a while.
We started studying plants this week and I am loving it. There are so many fun things to do with plants. 

 We planted our lima beans in clear cups so we could see the roots grow.

We did a main idea activity with the book "Our Tree Named Steve."

I love this book! It's such a sweet story. I got the idea to use it for main idea from Amy Lemons wonderful blog.  She used construction paper to make a tree. Click on the picture to view her post.

I didn't have that much time so the kids drew a tree and wrote the main idea of the book on the trunk. They wrote three supporting details on the leaves.

We also did a fun flower craft from Made for First Grade. Click on the image to go to their TPT store.

I think the kiddos did a great job making and labeling their flowers.

Crazy About the Brain!

I'm just fascinated by the brain!  I read a lot about the research that has been done recently on what helps the brain to learn. 


Yesterday I read an article that was written a couple of years ago by Eric Jensen, and was again inspired.
