St. Patty's Day Fun and a Freebie

Don't you just love St. Patrick's Day?  It's one of my very favorite special days!

Why?  Well, I admit, I have Irish blood in me, but I think it's because of the timing.  In New England, the winters are so very long that by the middle of March, we need something fun and silly to celebrate.  So we all wear green and wear silly leprechaun pins and headbands.  It's good for lifting spirits while waiting for those first signs of spring.

Plus, it's an opportunity to sneak in extra practice on those important skills!  Below are some free addition and subtraction story problems.  (I don't think they can get enough problem solving practice, and adding stories about leprechauns makes it more fun!)  These are designed for second grade, but would be useful for high first graders or review for third graders.

Place Value Monster Game {freebie}

Stop on by I Love 2 Teach for a {free place value game} that can be used with kids working on building numbers from 2-digits to 6-digits.  The materials you need are super simple and the fun your kids will have while working on place value is super high!

Twelve About Twelve

Did you realize this Wednesday is 12-12-12?  Did you realize this won't happen again until December 12, 2112?  We won't have triple numbers like that until January 1, 2101, and I have a feeling I won't be around by then!

When I realized 1,212 was my the number of "likes" I have on facebook, I thought I might have some fun by brainstorming 12 things we can have kids do to celebrate 12-12-12! Addition Strategies

This week, we've been using my Addition Strategies pack to review the different strategies to use when adding....

These are the strategies that are in the center/"assessment."

I gave the "test" today....it was interesting. First, they had to solve the problems that are on the paper, then they have to cut and paste the problems under the header of the strategy they used. I got to see some interesting "answers" today after working on the centers all week.

Standards of Mathematical Practice 101

As I learn about the Common Core, I find I need to sort out the parts in order to get my head around the Standards.  

The Math Standards are split into two parts.  There's the Standards for Mathematical Content, which are different for every grade.  

Then there are the Standards of Mathematical Practice which are the same for all grades.  Come on over to Elementary Matters to see how I organized these Practice Standards so I could understand them myself!

The Everything Tool Kit

I like to have plenty of tools available for my students to help the learning along.  I've spent hours making tools and charts for every subject.  My plan for Back to School is to have the children keep a folder in their desk for every subject, and they'll be decorating each folder with the tools.  I have a sample freebie that you can see in this image that includes some math, some reading, and some Science tools.  Come on over to Elementary Matters to download your freebie and see more of the Everything Tool Kit.

Learning Math Facts With Cuisenaire Rods and a Freebie

Starmallow Math Fun

Yesterday, I went to Target and found these fun StarMallows. I think these are supposed to be for Fourth of July but I thought these would be fun for a few math activities. 

We are working on graphing and probability right now so I created two sheets to use with the StarMallows.
