3 Freebies and An Apology

The Everything Tool Kit

I like to have plenty of tools available for my students to help the learning along.  I've spent hours making tools and charts for every subject.  My plan for Back to School is to have the children keep a folder in their desk for every subject, and they'll be decorating each folder with the tools.  I have a sample freebie that you can see in this image that includes some math, some reading, and some Science tools.  Come on over to Elementary Matters to download your freebie and see more of the Everything Tool Kit.

Spring Means Science, Social Studies, and a Freebie!

Habitat for sale

Well, today, I conjured up this cute little activity - so I had to come home and pretty it up for y'all!

It's about animals' habitiats...and using inferencing skills! A 2-for-1 in my book :)

The kids had really fun.

They had to match animals with their habitats using clues, then we brainstormed other animals that they could create their own Habitat For Sale ad

Do you "Scoot"?

Have you heard of the game "Scoot"? I'm sure if you Google it, you'll find tons of things.

Basically, you set out numbered questions on desks and students "scoot" around the room, answering each question on a recording sheet. It's a fun way to get them up and moving.

I use a "Scoot-esque" assessment for my unit on properties of matter and I've just shared it on my blog!

Habitats!

    At Keeping up with class, we've finished our habitat unit in second grade.  It was sprinkled with a little, laptop research, paragraph writing, habitat decorating, and water colors.  It equaled lots of fun and lots of learning! Come check it out.

Picture Books as a Springboard to Science Inquiry

I love teaching science. I love that it is hands-on. I love that kids get to ask questions, after all, they are naturally inquisitive! I love that kids love to learn science and want to become entomologists, astronomers, and most recently in my class, little meteorologists. Most of all, I LOVE how science pops up in picture books and how these quality reads lead to authentic science learning experiences.

Last term we read That Magnetic Dog by Bruce Whatley. We ended up doing a mini-unit on magnetism that wasn't in our planning!
